A businessman was on Monday shot and seriously injured in a robbery incident at Nyali Center, Mombasa County.
Confirming the incident, Mombasa county police commander Johnston Ipara said the businessman identified as Mr Fahad Hajj was shot in his buttocks.
Mr Hajj, a proprietor of mass petrol station, was rushed to Aga Khan Hospital to receive treatment and the police said he is in a stable condition.
According to the police, the businessman gave police conflicting reports at the hospital saying he lost Sh400,000 to the gunmen from earlier Sh200,000 he had told police at the scene.
The police commander said the businessman was going to bank the money at Diamond Trust bank in Nyali when he was confronted by two armed robbers.
Mr Ipara said shortly after the businessman alighted from his private car, one of the robbers drew an AK 47 rifle and shot twice in the air to scare away onlookers.
“The suspect shot the man in the buttocks so that he could hand over the money, they picked the bag and escaped on a motorcycle,” said Mr Ipara as quoted by Baraka FM.
The police commander added that investigation is ongoing and urged members of the public to volunteer information which will lead to the arrest of the suspects.
