Property worth thousands of money was destroyed through arson attack in the morning of March 21 at Nzaikoni market in upper Kaewa ward, Kathiani sub-county.
Confirming the incident, upper Kaewa chief Titus Mbuva said that the fire began at around 1:00 am in one of the wholesale shops in Nzaikoni market destroying property worth thousands of money as residents tried to put out the fire.
"I received a call at around 1:15 am and was notified that a shop was on fire in Nzaikoni market. I immediately asked for help from Machakos as I hurried to the scene where residents were trying to put off the fire but too sad all efforts to put out the fire went astray," said Mbuva.
According to Mbuva, there were no casualties as no one was in the shop when it was set ablaze.
He said that together with Kathiani police, they will immediately launch a manhunt to arrest the suspects, where the shop owner said he has names of suspects who have been threatening his life.
Kathiani Mp Robert Mbui also expressed sadness of the arson attack. The Mp called for vigilance from Machakos county government whenever such incidents occur, citing that it was a shame fire extinguishers delayed to help the affected from incurring losses.
"It's unfortunate that governor Mutua and his government did not take quick action into the matter. The arson attack could have been dealt with immediately and the shop owner could not have incurred the great loss," said Mbui.
