Elungata had told a gathering in Kisumu that the person who died during the protests was hit with an object that was manufactured locally.

The Commissioner said he was not hit by a police bullet despite a postmortem indicating that the person died as a result of police bullet that was also retrieved from the body.

“For a fact, I can report here that the person who died was hit with an object. He did not die as a result of police bullet,” he said.

Political leaders led by Dr Hezron Makobewa have termed the remarks by Elungata as reckless and baseless.

Makobewa said such statements only heightened temperatures of the locals who are bitter with the kind of police brutality being witnessed in the lakeside city.

He said those who have been killed in Kisumu have been as a result of police bullet.

“The statement was reckless at a time we have even seen the post mortem report. It was a bullet, it was removed now why lie to Kenyans,” he said.

Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Saturday, Makobewa urged the locals to turn up in large numbers on Monday and Thursday for a peaceful demonstration.

He said IEBC must go to pave way for a newly reconstituted commission.

Makobewa appealed to the locals to stage peaceful demonstrations devoid of violence that always resulted into looting and destruction of property.
