Nyali MP aspirant Simon Adalla is advocating for the enactment of a law that will compel different political outfits to refund the nomination fee in the event that there is predetermined candidate for any elective post. Adalla, who spoke to The Star on phone, said the law should ensure that any candidate shortchanged before the election date is absorbed into the political party if no refund is made. He went on to argue that it is unfair for political parties to continue collecting millions of cash from aspirants when they know very well that they have plans to endorse certain candidate.“Political parties are becoming conning zones. The fees are usually non-refundable. Don’t make them conduits for collecting money,” he said. The legislator also said there are different political outfits sharing members because they have not cross checked their records, adding that it does not make sense for political parties to ask the Independent Boundaries and Electoral Commission (IEBC) to conduct free and fair polls yet they are not doing the same during nominations. “There is no scrutiny. Different parties are sharing members," he said. The aspirant further said politicians suspected of being involved in rigging in one way or another should be held accountable over the same. “If violence [led to victory] in primaries...if there was rigging ...what makes you think the same formula will not be used in the general election?” he posed.
