An aspirant in Meru has said he will spearhead for the construction of a superhighway linking Meru and the port city of Mombasa.
Meru senatorial aspirant Kobia Maranya said Meru and Mombasa towns were experiencing rapid development and linking the two urban areas would boost business.Meru County is popularly known for its sprawling miraa industry and building a highway connecting Meru and Mombasa would open up more market for the leafy product consumed while fresh. The highway, Kobia said will pass through Kitui in Ukambani shortening the distance covered by motorists between the two towns.Major infrastructural projects in Mombasa West have of recent sparked a rush for property and led to an unparalleled rise in land prices. The airport and Port Reitz roads are being extended into dual carriageways, with the works on the projects expected to be finished in two months. This is anticipated to bring to an end traffic gridlocks currently witnessed on the roads.Construction of the Moi International Airport road on the other hand, at a cost of about Sh5 billion, is projected to be accomplished by August according to Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).“I will lobby for this road,” Maranya, an independent candidate said adding the investment will also boost tourism in Mombasa.“It must be a super highway with eight lanes, four on each side. Mombasa is only 375 kilometres from Meru.”He spoke at Ruiru market in North Imenti constituency while on a campaign trail.
