Kithinji Kiragu, an Embu gubernatorial aspirant has urged the Kenyan government to consider students from poor family backgrounds for University scholarships.

This comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta promised that his government was going to sponsor 10,000 students in private Universities in the country.

In his statement, Kiragu said that the rich students who can afford fees and other expenses should not compete for the slots with other needy students.

"I laud the President's move allowing the government to sponsor students to private universities in the country. However, I urge the government to ensure that the scholarships only benefits the needy students who are from poor families," says Kiragu.

The government decided to sponsor 10,000 students to private universities increasing the number of this year's intake to over 80,000 candidates.
