The Kenya National Commission for Human Rights (KNCHR) has moved to the Supreme Court seeking to have aspirants eyeing different elective seats during forthcoming general elections with questionable integrity barred from vying.
Speaking on Monday, the group's chairperson Kagwiria Mbogori noted that political parties failed to adhere to Chapter Six of the Kenyan constitution while enlisting candidates, and therefore had to seek an advisory opinion from the court on standards that should apply to leadership and integrity.
"We are calling on the DPP to take action against parties and candidates who did not adhere to election laws. This should include de-registration of such parties and barring candidates who involved themselves in malpractices," she stated.
In a report by the group christened 'The Fallacious Vote', KNCHR further cited massive electoral malpractices during the just concluded party primaries, leading to disfranchisement of voters during the exercise.
"It was evident that most political parties were not prepared for the primaries. The majority of them, including the two major coalitions, opted to use the 2013 voters register because they lacked an updated political party membership list," Mbogori said.
