Members of the Migori County Assembly joined the public to plant trees to mark this years World Forest Day at the Migori Township Secondary school on Wednesday.

The members were led by the Majority Leader Mallan Ogega (Oruba/Ragana) Environment Committee chairman George Reagan Duro (Macalder/Kanyarwanda), Implementation Chairman Brian Osodo (Kachieng Ward), and Mary Odiga.

The leaders urged residents to plant more trees to ensure that Migori county attains the required forest cover of above the recommended 10%.

This year's theme was "Forests and Sustainable Cities."

A desertification alert was given to Kenya recently, that its paltry 7 percent forest cover is costing the continent and that it needs to achieve the recommended 10 percent cover.
