Members of Uasin Gishu County Assembly have passed a motion urging the county government to allocate more funds for the education sector so as to facilitate employment of more Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centers.
In a motion moved by nominated MCA Mary Goreti, the MCAs asked the county executive to ensure all ECDEs have at least three teachers as per the Education Act.
"We appreciate the county for employing two ECDE teachers per centre but that doesn't meet the set threshold hence need for an extra teacher to be employed so as to ensure our children get the best education foundation," said Mrs Goreti.
"Education Act stipulates that there are three stages in nursery school level; Baby class, middle and top class and having only two teachers per ECD mean one of the three groups will be disadvantaged," she added.
Assembly's Education Committee chairman Noah Kemboi seconded the motion saying availability of teachers and infrastructure are two key areas for a better education.
"ECD is a devolved function and the county needs to everything possible to ensure our children get the best education for a brighter future," said the Moiben MCA.
The motion received overwhelming support from the MCAs who also called for the deployment of teachers to feeder ECD centres.
"The county should also consider employing more than three teachers to centre like Langas, Kimalel and Kipkaren Primary schools which have more students," said Nominated MCA Leah Sambai.
Since 2013, the county government has been constructing ECD centres with over 1,000 teachers employed on contract basis.
