A Maseno court on Tuesday freed an assistant chief from Kisumu’s Seme Sub-county facing defilement charges on a 200,000 shillings bond.
The Ang'oga Sub-location assistant Chief Caleb Odundo was charged with attempted defilement of a 15-years-old girl which contravenes the sexual offences act.
This defilement case comes hardly three months after the same court in February sentenced a South West Seme Chief Michael Odhiambo for 20 years in prison after he was found guilty of repeatedly defiling a 14-year-old in 2015.
Presiding over the case, Magistrate Reuben Kipng'eno directed that Odundo should not be allowed to either directly or indirectly interact with the minor or the witnesses in the case.
“The court cannot hold the accused in custody as he still has rights, "the judge said.
He also directed that the case be mentioned on April 17 this year and a subsequent hearing be done on June 11.
The two incidents have stirred outrage from residents of Seme Sub County who claim that defilement cases were rife in the region.
The residents have also exuded concern that the same people charged with protecting their rights were the ones involved in grossly violating them.
