Naivasha Donkey Owners chairman Joseph Thendu has appealed to the owners to support the proposed donkey slaughterhouse saying it will create more opportunities for them.

Thendu said that the slaughterhouse will enable the residents to breed the donkeys professionally and in the process give them extra cash.

“Donkey meat produced here will be purely for export. We will also be able to fetch more money from the meat in comparison to the daily income of about Sh 3,000 vending water,” he cited.

Thendu was addressing a gathering of donkey owners at Kihoto where he said that there has been a significant reduction in donkey slaughtering cases.

“We have noted that there are no major cases of donkeys being stolen. We are now providing adequate security for our animals and hence they are rarely killed,” he added.

Magdaline Gatuma of the Naivasha District Veterinary Office said that the slaughterhouse would also ensure that donkeys received the proper care and maintenance that they deserved.

“If they are able to take proper care of the animals, they will fetch a higher price at the market. This is a great motivating factor to the animal breeders and hence we challenge them to accept their offer,” she added.
