The attorney general, Githu Muigai's decision to suspend the registration of the Atheist Society of Kenya has taken a new twist with the society set to sue him.
According to the association’s president, Harrison Mumia, the suspension of registration to them has been through the media and nobody has served them with an official letter.
"The suspension has not been made official. We are only getting this from media reports but if he makes it official, he should then prepare for a major legal battle," said Mumia.
Muigai suspended the registration of the group after bowing to pressure from religious groups across the country.
According to Mumia, the moment the decision is made official to them by the AG, they will move to court immediately.
"We have the backing of top lawyers in the country who are ready to represent us in court if our society is deregistered," said Mumia.
Muigai is said to have bowed to pressure from religious leaders who had called on him to resign for contradicting the Kenyan values.
“The church has the role of trying to convince non-believers into believing not criticising people for exercising their rights .Let them contact AIK to try to convert us," said Mumia.
These developments came after the society celebrated their registration a month ago.
