Residents of Slota Slum in Mavoko sub-county have vowed to send home governor Alfred Mutua in the forthcoming 2017 elections.
They said they were irked with the government claiming it has neglected the slum and its residents despite them remitting taxes regularly.
“We have not seen any development implemented in Slota Slum by the Machakos government since it came to existence in 2013,” said spokesman Joseph Omolo.
They spoke to this writer in the slum on Monday.
Omolo said the locals are faced with lots of challenges some of which they never experienced before devolution took effect.
He said they have been living with problems of acute water shortage, uncollected garbage and open raw sewerage since Mavoko Municipal Council seized to be in existence.
“As you can see the environment we are living in, we are seriously suffering. We were even better off under Mavoko Municipal Council before implementation of 2010 constitution took affected,” said Omolo.
Omolo said women and children spend most of their time queuing at Mavoko Water and Sewerage Services water “viosks” in the slum on daily basis.
He said they wait to collect water which is not there hence ending up returning home late in the evening without the commodity after wasting a whole day in vain.
“It is not easy to predict the day when water will be available, they keep waiting on the queue,” said Omolo.
Omolo said the women spend with their children time at water points since they cannot afford buying the commodity from water vendors who sell a 20litre jerrycan at Sh 60.
He said the residents have suffered for a long under the Machakos government hence need for them to vote wisely to ensure Mutua and his entire leadership are sent parking in 2017 polls.
“This is the same slum where Mutua launched a fake water project some time back, he then propagated propaganda on media that his government had connected houses in Slota Slum to showers,” said Omolo.
