Residents of Athi River town, Machakos County yesterday protested against hiked fares by public service vehicles plying routes in the region during this festive eve.

Addressing the press in Athi River shortly after their demonstration, George Mutinda, the residents spokes person said the increased fares were unjustifiable.

Mutinda said the motorists more so matatu operators had taken advantage of the holiday to tripple the fares even though the government had reduced costs of fuel.

He said some of the familiers in the region and who wished to travel to their rural homes were already stranded due to the hike with no alternatives but to stay put in their town homes.

The spokes person said it was not fair for the motorists to hike the fares arguing the millage covered by the vehicles had not increased terming it robbery without violence.

Mutinda said the Kenyan inflation rate had gone very high seriously affecting common members of the public thereby reason for emperthis by those in public transport industry so as not to inflict on innocent Kenyans.

He therefore called for prompt government's intervention to avert the situation arguing it was its responsibility to regulate public transport industry and interprete what reduducing costs of fuel meant to Kenyans and the country as a whole.
