Parents with children learning at Athi River Primary School in Mavoko, Machakos County have been told to pay Sh 1,000 for their children’s tuition fee.
The school’s headteacher Joel Mwania said all parents with children in classes 6 – 8 must pay Sh 1,000 for each child per term.
Mwania spoke during a parent’s meeting at the school on Thursday.
He said the children will be offered remedial studies early in the morning and late in the evening on daily a basis.
Mwania said morning lessons start at 6.00am to 7.30am while the evening ones begin at 5.00pm – 6.00 p.m.
“All the parents with children in classes 6 – 8 in this school should pay the tuition fees as stated. Those who do not want can leave, their children will not be forced to attend the remedial classes.
Parents who attended the meeting unanimously agreed to comply for their children to attend the early morning and late evening lessons.
They said what they wanted was ‘good’ results.
The parents said they had been impressed with the school’s 2017 KCSE good results.
“The school is performing, why we should criticize the tuition while children performed exemplary in 2017 KCPE,” said parent James Omolo.
Eight of 2017 KCPE candidates who sat in the school have been admitted to form one in national secondary schools.
The government had however banned tuition of all forms in all schools both public and private including the ‘remedial’ classes.
