Parents from Athi River Sub-County have been cautioned against unlawful transfer of child custody.

Addressing journalists at her office in Athi River Town on Thursday, Athi River children officer, Faith Kamau, said that the practice was becoming common in the region.

"I warn parents and guardians of children from Athi River Sub-County against engaging in unlawful child guardianship transfers, as it is not acceptable," said Kamau.

Kamau said several parents from the sub-county were fond of evading their parental responsibilities by giving out their biological children to well wishers most of whom were not even their relatives.

She said such parents surrender their children to other people under informal arrangements thus causing problems whenever they wanted the children back in their custody.

Kamau said the situation leads to security hitches and unpeaceful coexistence among the warring parties and families, since some of the aggrieved parents resort to weird ways in a bid to get their children back.

She said children get traumatised when they see people fighting over their custody, with some ending up leading dejected lives.

Kamau urged the parents to follow the laid down legal procedures whenever they need to transfer the custody of their children to other people.
