Athi River primary school is set for elections of the children “government,” says head teacher John Mwania.

Addressing the press at his office in the school on Wednesday, Mwania said the children will be on Monday, March 4, 2016 be conducting elections for the school’s President, deputy president, speaker, senators, governors, members of parliament and members of county assemblies.

Mwania said this is a provision of the new circular circulated in schools across the country by the national government through its Ministry of Education.

According to Mwania, the school president will replace head boy, deputy president head girl, governors prefects, senators monitors while speakers, members of parliament and members of county assembly replace class representatives in that order.

Mwania said the elections will provide opportunity for all the children from class one to eight to exercise their democratic rights of electing their leaders for the next five years.

He said all children who are interested in any of the positions were free to submit their names to respective class teachers to allow for early preparation of ballot papers.

Mwania disclosed that in the polls, him as the head teacher will be patron while teachers play roles of polling clerks and presiding officers.

He said preparations towards the exercise were in its very final stages.
