Residents of Sofia slum in Athi River town, have called on the county government of Machakos to clean up the garbage littering the town to prevent disease outbreaks.
Addressing journalists in the slum on Thursday, the residents said parts of the town have been turned into dumping sites.
"We are tired of the stench we inhale from dumping sites which have been created in our neighborhoods, Sofia should be cleared off garbage just like other areas within Athi River town," said resident Josphat Ofula.
Ofula claimed the hips of garbage that dominate parts of the slum were never there before devolution took place hence argued were out of individuals creations.
"These garbage seen everywhere within and around Sofia slum have just been created, the slum residents also need to breath fresh air."
Gaudensia Mwikali, also a resident of the area expressed her fears that the slum was prone to diseases in case of outbreaks especially cholera and related diseases.
She said garbage seen everywhere in the slum was a time bomb waiting to explored arguing it is high time they be removed from the locals residences.
The residents urged the county government's leadership to speedily intervene to avoid disease outbreaks.
Attempts however, to reach the county government chief executive in charge of environment for comment were futile as his phone was off.
