Residents of Athi River town, within Machakos County have been told to put measures to ensure that they are safe from malaria infections.
Addressing press at a hotel in the town on Friday, Dr. John Odhiambo, Nairobi-based pediatric said most of the residents were exposed to malaria infections due to both ignorance and negligence.
Dr. Odhiambo said though numbers of those infected by Malaria in Kenya had reduced by approximately from 22 to 12 percent, there was need for people to be more careful and protect themselves.
He said more drainage systems should be constructed and well maintained in the region, as residents also make efforts of using treated nets whenever they go to bed to ensure that Athi River is the first town in the country to eliminate malaria and reduce child and mother mortality.
The medic said all pregnant women and under five children should sleep under treated mosquito nets always, as a way of eliminating malaria and keeping the group of people safe and free from the disease.
He noted that most of the sewage systems and water drainages were open and unattended to, thereby posing health risks given that mosquitos used them as zones to thrive in.
Dr. Odhiambo called on area leadership and the entire county to join the campaign against malaria, and initiate various projects geared towards public awareness and sensitization campaigns against the disease.
