Residents of Athi-River area in Machakos County are set to receive housing units at a lower cost after the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development signed a contract with a pan-African finance institution, Shelter Afrique (SAF).
Speaking in Athi River town where the infrastructure is to be setup, Cabinet Secretary of Housing Charity Ngilu stated the move was online with the ministry’s target of setting up 300,000 houses in the coming 2 years.
“The ministry has a big task ahead of providing affordable homes to our urban residents by the year 2017. That is why we are teaming up with the Shelter Afrique to fast track our vision and make it a reality,” said Ngilu.
“In Athi River town we are setting up more than 1,000 housing units that will be at low costs for the residents,” she added.
The Managing Director of shelter Afrique James Mugerwa, who had visited the scene together with the Cabinet Secretary on Wednesday, stated that the institution was prepared to work harmoniously in expanding the housing project.
“Our institution will exclusively support the housing sector development in urban towns. It will ensure the products required and support as per the agreements are offered efficiently,” said Mugerwa.
