Speaking when he hosted youth leaders at his office on Friday, Athi River ward representative, Michael Mutua, expressed concerns over the number of young people abusing drugs due to rampant unemployment.

He said that many youths spend their time on drugs noting that development of the area is at threat if appropriate action is not taken.

“I have learnt that many youths in Athi River are abusing drugs as a result of desperation for lacking jobs,” he said.

Mutua said there is need for appropriate measures to be taken to curb drug abuse and other social evils.

He encouraged them to apply for government funds and start business ventures that will support their livelihoods.

Mutua further asked the Machakos county government to put in place strategies that will create job opportunities.

The MCA said he will continue to seek opportunities that will help create job opportunities for the youth.

“I will continue to seek support from the county and the national government on how to address joblessness,” he added.
