Schools in Athi River sub-county have been warned against conducting unlawful tuitions.
The caution was issued by area director of education Joseph Kiema who said some of the schools were discretely conducting tuition even though it had been banned by the state.
“I am aware that some of the head teachers in the sub-county are still conducting tuitions even though they know very well that it is unlawful,” said Kiema.
Kiema who addressed the press at his office in Athi River town on Wednesday said he will not sit back and watch such schools continue breaking the law.
He said he will soon launch an intense crackdown in the schools to ensure the malpractice is completely seized in the sub-county.
Kiema said there was a new trend of teachers asking children to attend classes during school holidays and weekends in civilians to avoid being noted that they were going for tuition.
He said he had in vain severally talked to head teachers who had confirmed conducting tuitions in their schools some months ago claiming they were not tuition but remedial classes.
“I have severally engaged teachers who claimed they were conducting remedial classes to weak children but not tuition, I told them there is nothing like remedial classes. Tuition is tuition and is illegal, it cannot be justified in whatever way,” said Kiema.
He said those teachers found conducting tuition in the schools during the crackdown will face full force of the law.
