Even though the town is popularly known to be an industrial one, not all the residents earn their daily livelihoods through working in the hundreds of industrial companies in the town and its environs.

As any other part of the nation, the locals especially youths are engrossed in all sorts of economic activities to put food on their tables and those of their families.

A spot check by this writer in the town on Tuesday found out that the number of youths who have been attracted to the construction industry popularly known as "mjengo" in the town is wanting.

James Onditi, a casual laborer at a construction site told this writer that majority of the youth from the region liked working in construction sites because they were well paying.

"We as youths from Athi River town have realised that construction jobs are well paying as compared to working in the industrial companies located all over the town and its surroundings," said Onditi.

Samson Njoroge, another local said male youth had ditched industrial jobs to women, he said it is better to do heavy jobs and reap big than lazy around in industrial companies and earn pennants.

They advised the many youths who trade in boda boda business to drop the motorbikes and seek jobs in construction site in the town so as to get reasonable earnings for their work.
