Youths from Athi River in Machakos County have praised the government for introducing Makadara Express Cargo train.
They said the train will help in reducing cargo trucks plying between Mombasa and Nairobi towns thereby easing traffic along Nairobi – Mombasa Highway.
The youths said that was one of the long-term strategies of reducing rates of carnages on the road.
“I am impressed on how creative the Jubilee administration is, there will be fewer rates of road accidents on the road if the cargo trucks are reduced thereby saving thousands of lives,” said spokesperson Naomi Mumbi.
They addressed the press in Athi River town on Tuesday.
Mumbi said they were optimistic the government will consider them as Athi River youths during mass recruitment in various jobs which the cargo train will create.
She said most of them sat their KCSE examinations as early as 2010 but have since been idling due to joblessness.
The youths said majority had not gone beyond fourth form education due to poverty, could not afford tertiary colleges education for professional training.
The first commercial cargo train arrived in Nairobi on January 1st at the ultra-modern inland container depot which was launched by President Kenyatta a fortnight ago.
The arrival of the cargo train is in line with President Kenyatta’s government policy of reducing costs of doing business in the country.
In his new year’s message, President Kenyatta said the new commercial cargo train would cut costs and delays in trade for Kenyans and its neighbors.
