Athinai Secondary School which is in Rongai Constituency has been closed indefinately after the students went on rampage yesterday and destroyed properties of unknown value.
The students accused the administration of the school of increasing the fees. The students broke windows and also pelted stones at the busy Nakuru baringo highway.
Joseph Karugu who is a form three students said that the school has been increasing the fees each and every term without consulting the parents. "Since the year 2014, the school has been increasing the fees each and every term and we wonder whats the main reason behind that.
There is nothing new we are getting and even the teachers are not enough. The school has a very serious problem especially the shortage of teachers", Karugu said.
Harrison Mwangi who is a form 2 student said that it was very bad for the school to be increasing the fee structure whenever they think of doing it.
"If it wanted to increase the fee, the administration of the school should have first called a meeting with the parents so that they can give them a reasonable reason as to why they want to increase the fees. Our parents do not dig money in the farm. The school is charging us very high compared to other schools and yet the school does not have enough teachers", Mwangi said.
Speaking to the press yesterday, Rongai Educational officer George Ngao who visited the school said that the school board was going to address the issue this coming week.
"We have already summoned the school board and by this coming week, you will have a statement from us. I am aware about the complains but i think going on rampage was not the best solution", Ngao said.
Ngao went ahead and urged the parents of the affected school to be calm and wait for a solution on the problem affecting the school.
