Machakos governor Dr Alfred Mutua has condemned the Tuesday storming of Moi University by some politicians to inject out the new institution’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Laban Ayiro terming it as shameful.

Mutua during an interview on Radio Maisha on Wednesday morning termed the incident as uncalled for.

He stated that the act by the politicians depicted that tribalism is still rife in the country.

“It was wrong and shameful for the politicians to storm into the institution to eject out the new appointed Vice Chancellor,” he said.

The Machakos governor said that unless something is done tribalism will remain an obstacle to development.

Mutua asked politicians to keep of management of institutions if the standards of education are to improve in the country.

On Tuesday Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago and his Elgeyo Marakwet counterpart Alex Tolgos together with some Members of Parliament stormed the Moi University in Eldoret seeking to kick out the newly appointed Vice Chancellor Mr Ayiro.

The politicians argued that Professor Ayiro was imposed to the institution by the Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

The politicians claimed that a Mr Isaac Kosgey should be the Vice-chancellor since he topped in the recent interviews for the VC position.

The leaders vowed to interfere with the running of the institution until when the appointment of professor Ayiro will be revoked.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission condemned the incident saying that investigations have been launched and those found to have led the storming of the university will be dealt with accordingly.

On Wednesday the new Vice-chancellor officially took charge of the institution amid the controversy.
