Attorney General Githu Muigai’s remarks that the government will not surrender any Kenyan to the International Criminal Court based at the Hague for trial has been termed as ‘reckless and primitive’ by Senator Janet Ong’era.
Muigai reiterated President Uhuru Kenyatta’s remarks about the government’s position on ICC saying that the country will set local mechanisms to handle alleged cases on crimes against humanity.
Ong’era spoke on Thursday during a funeral at Bonchari and faulted the government’s decision claiming it will perpetuate impunity.
“I am disappointed that the person who should duly advise the president is busy misleading him. The utterances by my respected Professor are reckless and primitive and should not be allowed to stand in the present times,” she said.
“This is supporting impunity openly by trying to violate international statutes which we signed as a country in good faith. I urge Kenyans to resist such attempts of planning to guard criminals against prosecution,” said Ong’era who is also a constitutional lawyer.
She challenged the government to fully support ICC and maintained the court which was working based on integrity rather than political influence as alleged by President Kenyatta’s government.
“Muigai understands the international procedures and as a lawyer, I won’t just watch him mutilating the law. The ICC is fair and impartial and not political. I wonder why they call it political and yet recently we saw the Jubilee team celebrating vindication of DP William Ruto,” she said.
The ICC has come under scathing attacks in the recent past with the government determined to withdraw from it citing incompetence as the main reason.
