COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has poked holes on the decision by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to slash salaries for senior state officials.
In a statement on Monday, SRC Chairperson Sarah Serem announced pay cuts for the President, Deputy President, Governors, Members of Parliament, Cabinet Secretaries and Members of the County Assemblies. But in a quick rejoinder, Atwoli has accused the Serem-led commission of incompetence and acting above the law."There is a way to address issues affecting workers and all structures are in place," he said in a telephone interview with The Star Newspaper on Thursday."Her (Serem's) actions are illegal, unlawful and biased," Atwoli said adding that the commission should have brought relevant stakeholders on board first," "She should stop interfering with independently negotiated bargaining agreements and salaries," he added. He argued that the August House should have been notified on the matter before the commission arriving on the decision.
