An executive member of the Amani National Congress (ANC) has told Central Organisation of Trade Unions Secretary General Francis Atwoli to apologise to the country for advocating for the creation of more senior government positions.
ANC Secretary General Barrack Muluka on Wednesday accused Atwoli of using Labour Day, a day meant for worker's recognition for their tireless efforts in building the world to advance politics.
"You cannot use the workers’ day to advocate for more positions in the government, out of which the workers will pay those put in those positions," Muluka said urging the COTU official to apologize for the remark.
Atwoli on Tuesday during celebrations to mark the 2019 Labour Day said there is need for a constitutional amendment to create more positions to accommodate more leaders in the government.
“Let us use the Bomas Draft, because the problem we have now is exclusion. Not everyone can be president. The Constitution should be amended to accommodate more people,” said Atwoli.
“If we do not amend the Constitution, where do you think Uhuru will go, and he is a young man?” he added.
There is already speculation that if the proposed constitutional amendment succeeds opposition chief Raila Odinga may be president.
The proposed amendment gained momentum after Raila met and held talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta at his Harambee House office in Nairobi on March 9.
Atwoli during his address said accommodating more leaders in government will help curb divisions that usually emanate after presidential elections.
Deputy President William Ruto and a section of leaders from his Rift Valley backyard are against the Constitutional amendment.
