[Photo| Courtesy]Francis Atwoli has pointed a blaming finger to certain senior government officials after Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) revoked an honorary degree that he was to be awarded during a recent graduation ceremony. The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) Secretary-General said the Jubilee government senior officials put pressure on the institution to revoke his degree, something that has angered people of the Luhya community. However, MMUST Vice-Chancellor Fred Otieno, denied claims that the university was under pressure from the Ministry of Education to cancel the awarding of the degree on political grounds.According to Atwoli, the revocation was one of the reasons why Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa was chased from the Maragoli Cultural Festival on Boxing Day.Speaking in Kitale, Atwoli said "I was supposed to get the degree but the Jubilee government gave instructions that I should not be awarded."On December 5, MMUST advertised in local dailies that it had nominated Atwoli, for the degree following recommendations by the university senate and council.
