The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) has called for the arrest of the Salaries and Renumeration Commission (SRC) chairperson Sarah Serem.
This is in relation to a recent move in which the SRC announced the reduction of salaries to the president, his deputy, Members of Parliament and Members of County Assembly among other state officers.
According to Cotu Secretary General Francis Atwoli, the Sarah Serem-led commission broke the law when it reduced the salaries.
"You cannot just wake up and say you are reducing salaries. Before you come up with something like that, you must consult with all the relevant stakeholders," said Atwoli during an interview on Citizen TV's JKL Live.
"Sarah Serem should be arrested. She has broken the law as employment act Part 4 protects employees salaries," he added.
The Cotu boss further said the SRC chairperson overstepped in her mandate since "her role is to advice government on issues related to wages and not to reduce them."
Under the new structure, president and his deputy will earn monthly gross of Sh1.4million and Sh1.2million respectively down from Sh1.650 and Sh1.40million.
Cabinet Secretaries will now earn fixed salaries of Sh924,000 down from Sh1.056 million while Speaker of both Houses will take home Sh1.155 million each from the previous Sh1.32 million while their deputies to earn Sh924, 000.
MP’s gross will be Sh621,250 from Sh710,000 and MCAs will carry home Sh144,000.
