COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has cautioned politicians against revisiting the 2007-08 post-election violence.
The workers' union boss criticised President Uhuru Kenyatta for reviving the debate of violence in which 1,133 people were killed and thousands left badly scarred.
He said it was wrong for Uhuru to blame opposition chief Raila Odinga for the bloodshed that almost tore the country apart.
Atwoli noted Uhuru's claims were not in good taste saying it was wrong for the Head of State to utter such words as the country prepares for the August 8 polls.
“This should not be coming out especially at this time when Kenyans are united and praying for peaceful elections,” said Atwoli in a statement seen by the Star.
On Wednesday, during a political rally in Kisii county, President Kenyatta accused the former Prime Minister of being at the centre of violence following the disputed 2007 elections.
“Raila has again started inciting Kenyans as he did in 2007.
Yeye ndiyo aliwasha moto
(He is the one who ignited the fire,” Uhuru said.
In a quick rejoinder, Raila denied the allegations saying that the President was not honest to Kenyans in his utterances.
Atwoli said post-election violence memories are painful and Kenyans should not be reminded of the agony they went through.
“The wounds are still fresh and any slight provocation will easily plunge this country into turmoil. Women, children and workers will be affected,” Atwoli said on Thursday.
He added: “Let political leaders, both in government and the Opposition, keep their loud mouths shut and allow Kenyans to continue praying for peace.
