The African Union Summit set for Rwanda next month will see heads of states getting the first experience of using the new electronic African Union passport, which is set to make traveling in the continent easier for Africans.
The move is a realisation of a dream to have a visa-free travel for Africans within the continent by 2020.
Traveling across the continent has been difficult for Africans since they are required to have as many visas as half the number of countries in Africa. Whereas Americans can travel in the continent and access their visa on arrival or even without.
The move was also termed as 'Symbolic and significant' by the chair of African Union Commission Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
"The goal of the AU passport is to turn Africa into a continent with seamless borders, giving the passport to state leaders is a symbolic and significant step," said Dlamini-Zuma.
Officials have been pushing for the move since the organisation of African Union (OAU) which was established in 1960.
