Kisumu County will soon start audit of buildings in the city in the wake of a fire incident at a guest house one week ago that claimed two lives.
Kisumu County Executive Committee Member for Roads and Physical Planning Nerry Achar said the audit will help the county to avert disaster in case of tragedies.
Achar said guest houses must ensure that they have emergency exits incase of disaster.
“We will insist that buildings like hotels have exits so that incase of tragedies people can escape,” he said.
Speaking to the Press in Kisumu on Friday at his office, Achar said such an audit is not meant to victimize any investor but just to create a safe city.
Achar said the audit will look into all buildings in the city and those condemned will have to be brought down.
“We have started bringing down buildings on road reserves, that will continue for a while so that we can start opening rods within the estates,” he said.
He called for the support of the public noting that in most instances the public always turn against the county whenever they start implementing some of its policies.
Achar said they are working closely with the county Assembly to ensure they pass laws that will help streamline the housing industry in the county.
