Poor record keeping at the county level is said to be the cause of the misuse of county funds claims the auditor general Edward Ouko.

On Thursday, the auditor general spoke during a conference in Nairobi and highlighted how the lack of record keeping has caused the misappropriation of county funds.

“We don’t have proper financial systems today in most of the counties. Whatever is there is that they are doing other things which are not within the set standards. That’s why we want them to be brought into such events (FiRe award),” said Mr Ouko.

Ouko added that those found not complying with the system using policy will be held accountable.

He further expressed his interest in working closely with the accounts at the Public Sector Accounting Standards Board (PSASB) to ensure transparency.

According to a report released by the Auditor-General and Controller of Budget offices, county government and assemblies have been misusing public funds.
