Australian Prime Minister Malcon Turnbull has described the death of New South Wales based teacher, Gabrielle Maina, as ‘tragic and unfortunate’, reports the Guardian.
Gabrielle, as identified by ABC, was shot dead by suspected thugs at Nairobi’s wealthy Karen suburb when dropping her son in a friend’s house on Thursday.
“It is a tragic event and our prayers and love and condolences go out to her family and loved ones,” Turnbull told 3AW radio on Friday.
The English teacher has been in Kenya since 2015, with her Facebook page saying she comes from Armidale, in New South Wales.
Prior to her death, Gabrielle was the head teacher of Hillcrest Preparatory School, according to information retrieved from her school’s website.
“She appears to have been killed by fatal gunshot would during the failed robbery,” adds the PM, in his first remarks about the tragic death.
The school’s website says she moved to Kenya to establish her family in the country so that “her children can grow up with their extended family”.
Foreign Affairs department in Australia has since confirmed that it is providing consular assistance to the family of the deceased Australian national.
