The Water Resource Management Authority has embarked on a multi-agency approach to clean Athi and Nairobi Rivers at a cost of 2.5 million shillings.

During a stakeholder’s engagement forum in Nairobi, authority’s Chief Executive officer Mohamed Shurie said the initiative with see thousands of Kenyans dependent on Athi River waters benefit.

The massive clean-up and Restoration program will see over 500 kilometers  stretch of both Nairobi and Athi rivers cleaned up in line with the vision 2030 which outlines sustainable growth in conserving the environment.

Shurie says the clean-up will benefit thousands of water consumers.

While hailing the gesture, Social and Human sciences Specialist Abdul Rahman Lamin from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization said that Nairobi River faces a myriad of challenges urging stakeholders to make the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals a reality.

Water resource and Management Authority is, however, appealing on members of public to change their attitude in waste and effluent disposal into the rivers so as to conserve the environment.
