Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has raised concerns on the increasing rates of irresponsible gambling among students in the country.
Speaking on Thursday when he presided over a prize giving and thanksgiving day at Ngara Girls, the CS decried the alarming situation in the students circles and asked parents to help give direction to the young people.
"The trend is alarming and I call upon the parents to offer proper guidance to learners to avoid gambling and other cases of indiscipline," he said.
Matiang'i also decried the great determination by students to seek success of riches through shortcuts like gambling and not through education.
"It is regrettable for students to look for success in monetary terms through gambling instead of working their way up," he said.
A few months ago, a Maseno University student used his Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) money to place a bet in a football match between Barcelona and Levante where he lost the Sh40 000 he placed on the bet, leading to his dropping out of school.
