Nyali MP Hezron Awiti faced it rough on Monday after he was allegedly attacked by rowdy youth when he publicly criticized Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho in a public meeting.
Awiti who has declared interest for the Mombasa governor seat in the forthcoming elections was addressing a meeting at Maweni Grounds when he questioned the governor's development record.
However, his speech was cut short when a group of rowdy youth emerged chanting the name of Joho and started throwing stones at the lawmaker forcing him to scamper for safety.
It took the effort of the police to calm the situation before order was restored.
Later on, the unbowed Awiti criticized the Governor for allegedly hiring goons to cause chaos at his meeting saying Joho, who is also the ODM deputy party leader has sensed defeat.
"Let him know that I will not be scared by the threats. If Joho wants fair competition, let us meet at the ballot and not use youth to disrupt peaceful meetings," the infuriated Awiti said.
Awiti is among the candidates who have declared interest in unseating Joho in the crowded Mombasa gubernatorial race that also includes Senator Hassan Omar Hassan and businessman Suleiman Shabaal.
