Nyali MP Hezron Awiti is said to have been caught between a rock and a hard place as the race to dethrone Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho heats up.

The aspirant is torn between defecting from Wiper Party to his newly formed Vibrant Democratic Party, The Star reports.

In an interview with the daily, one of his confidants said Awiti held a series of meetings with his advisors over the matter.

“It was a marathon of meetings that even went up to 1am,” said the source.

The source also revealed that the MP told the advisors he has spent a lot of money in campaigning to become the next county boss, adding that he cannot afford to step down for Senator Omar Hassan who is also eying the same seat through a Wiper ticket.

However, the MP feels defecting from Wiper to a new party is a gamble that is likely to cost him dearly.

“We discussed that move at length because it would mean we have to bank more on Awiti as an individual than the new party should he decide to run with it,” added the source, as quoted by the Star.

Speaking to the press at the Moi International Airport on Thursday, Awiti insisted that he has no intentions to walk away from Kalonzo ahead of the August polls as speculated.

“I am not leaving Wiper. But I am ready for anything,” he said.
