Addressing his supporters in a Mombasa hotel on Thursday, Awiti told off other contestants eying the seat saying the people of Mombasa only have two choices.

“I want to declare here and now that there will be only two political bigwigs in the race for governorship, and that is myself and Governor Joho. However, there can only be one winner and that will be me,” said Mr Awiti.

Awiti also refuted claims of having made a political pact to deputise Joho, saying he had made up his mind to vie for the county's top seat.

The Mombasa gubernatorial race has attracted several leaders including the incumbent Hassan Joho, Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar, Nyali MP Hezron Awiti, former Kisauni MP Ananiah Mwaboza and prominent businessman Suleihman Shahbal.
