Nyali MP Hezron Awiti has pledged to fight drug abuse in the Coast region if he is elected as governor in the next general elections.
Mr Awiti said he will focus his efforts to end the drug menace that has been blamed for the rise in crime in Mombasa, if he is elected into the governor’s seat in the 2017 general elections.
Drug abuse among youth is still a challenge and as a government, we must act now to make sure drugs are eradicated at the Coast. If given the opportunity to become governor, no drugs will be sold in Mombasa as drug abuse in the county has reached alarming levels,” he said.
He added, “We are not going to allow anyone to use money to kill our youth through drugs. Drug peddlers are killing our youth and they should be arrested and prosecuted,” said Mr Awiti said.
Speaking in Mamba Village Centre, the MP said the drug problem has affected many youth in the region as most of them are pushed into crime.
Some security officials in Mombasa County have been accused of undermining the county government’s efforts in fighting the drug menace that has affected the youth in the Coast region.
Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa said some security officials in the county are working with suspected drug barons.
