Nyali MP Hezron Awiti has received a major endorsement after the Gema community in Mombasa backed his gubernatorial bid.
Awiti, who is vying for the top county seat on a Vibrant Democratic Party ticket, defected from Wiper citing frustration from the party’s top brass. The MP was endorsed by the community in an event presided over by Kongowea MCA candidate Joseph Kirema of Maendeleo Chap Chap, who said his ( Awiti’s) performance scoreboard speaks for itself.Speaking at Mombasa Show Ground where he met members of the community, Awiti downplayed allegations that he was a Jubilee project, adding that he does not support calls for the six piece voting pattern.Awiti exuded confidence in beating his opponents; Governor Hassan Joho (ODM), Senator Hassan Omar (Wiper) and Suleiman Shahbal of Jubilee in the August 8 polls. He took a swipe at Joho’s administration for allegedly failing to improve the state of the Kongowea market which he said is in pathetic condition despite being the backbone of the region’s economy. He further urged residents to reject leaders propagating ethnicity.“The county is cosmopolitan and I’m toning down on politics of NASA and Jubilee because both presidential candidates are my friends,” said Awiti, as quoted by The Star.“My interest is in the governor seat not the presidential one. My quest is to unite county residents. They must continue to live together after the polls,” he added.
