Nyali MP Hezron Awiti has dismissed Mombasa governor aspirants, saying he is best-suited for the job.
Speaking during an interview with the Standard, Awiti said Mombasa has been thriving on business and not the perpetual politics local leaders engage in day in day out.
He dismissed Senator Hassan Omar, saying Mombasa residents do not need an activist to run the affairs of the county.
Awiti said Omar only understands how to fight for the rights of the people, but not how to transform the county into a small corner of paradise.
He said the county needs someone who understands investment like himself to stimulate the economy and reclaim its glory as a trading powerhouse in the region.
He said that the incumbent, Governor Hassan Joho, is not the right candidate for the job as he has little knowledge about finance.
“I have known Joho for a long time and can tell you that the man has never operated even a kiosk and is therefore not experienced in finance,” said Awiti.
He also dismissed businessman Suleiman Shahbaal's candidature, saying he does not have what it takes to replace Joho is the next general elections.
“As for Hassan Omar, he may be my friend but I must say that he is an activist. We do not need an activist to run Mombasa County. As for Shahbaal, he has already proven he has no capacity to beat Joho,” he said, as quoted by the Standard.
He said he is best placed to unseat Joho, as he has the experience required.
“I am the best placed and I am my own man. I fund my own campaigns and will therefore not owe anyone anything,” he added.
The outspoken MP further said he will not be intimidated by individuals who want him to drop his gubernatorial bid.
“I have been accosted by a man named Farouk who pulled a gun and asked me to take my political ambitions to Kisumu. These suspicious characters trailing me and attempting to harm me will not intimidate me,” he said.
