Nyali MP Hezron Awiti has urged the government to establish a motor vehicle manufacturing and assembling plant in Mombasa County.
Addressing a group of youth in Mombasa, Awiti said the plant will boost the region's trade and economy.
Awiti said car dealers in the country have not been meeting the demands of the current population, hence the need to set up a plant near the Port of Mombasa to ease exportation.
The gubernatorial aspirant said the plant will also address the issue of unemployment in the coastal city.
“Industrialisation stalled in the late 1980s and early 90s. Re-opening of the production line will bring to an end the influx in imported goods, including motor vehicles, [which] has hurt our economy. Jobs will be created,” said Awiti, as quoted by The Star.
He further said that the country does not need to depend on imported automobiles when it has the capacity to manufacture cars locally.
The outspoken MP further asked the government to create tax-free holidays in order to promote businesses in the county.
