Speaking in Bamburi on Thursday when Uhuru toured the region, Awiti said drug abuse is a major challenge in the constituency, as it has destroyed the lives of many youth.

He said the region cannot afford to lose bright and talented youth at the expense of a few individuals with selfish interests.

"The major problem we have in Nyali is drugs. We are requesting you (President) to stamp your authority, arrest and strangle drug suppliers so that we can cut the link that is putting at risk the lives of many youth in this area," said Awiti, as quoted by the Nation.

Mombasa has been hitting headlines for months now due to increased cases of drug abuse.

Reports indicate that children as young as nine years old are engaging in substance abuse.

Awiti, who has declared interest in the Mombasa gubernatorial seat, has affirmed that he will deal with drug barons in the county upon election.
