Nyali MP Hezron Awiti's confidant, Ibrahim Kai, has accused Mombasa gubernatorial aspirant Anania Mwaboza of dividing the Mijikenda vote ahead of the general election.
Speaking in an interview with The Star, Kai reminded Mwaboza that the Mijikenda is not the only community that resides in Mombasa, adding that it is important for them to work with other communities to enjoy the fruits of devolution.
“He is the one being used to divide the community. The Mijikenda is not the only community living in Mombasa,” said Kai, as quoted by the daily.
Kai’s sentiments come after Mwaboza claimed that some leaders have been using the community to rise to power only to ‘dump’ them after the elections.
Mwaboza’s statement has been termed as divisive, with leaders from the community saying it is likely to sabotage their quest to power, as they cannot win the election without the support of non-natives.
Mwaboza, however, dismissed the claims, saying the community should aim higher and not settle for a deputy governor post.
“When Mwaboza says the Mijikenda should join hands and support one of our own, and backed by our neighbours from upcountry, I am labelled a tribalist,” he said.
Governor aspirants in Mombasa are all eyeing the Mijikenda vote bloc, as they make up a majority of the county's voting-eligible population.
