Mombasa Governor hopeful Hezron Awiti has urged residents and Kenyans at large to remain calm and peaceful as they wait to vote in the next months’ general election.
The Nyali MP also wants locals to pray for peaceful general election.
Addressing supporters in Mombasa on Wednesday, Awiti, pleaded with residents to shun off activities that can trigger violence.
He also asked residents to avoid associating with politicians who he said are preaching disunity.
‘‘I am appealing to Mombasa residents and Kenyans at large to remain calm and pray for peaceful general election,’’ he said as quoted by the Daily Nation.
The Vibrant Democratic Movement (VDM) said that there is no need for Kenyans to be antagonised by politicians whose main interest is to only get power.
Awiti at the same time called on the national Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to be alert and crack the whip on hate mongers.
He said that NCIC has to exercise its muscles and tame rogue politicians in order to guarantee peaceful polls.
Meanwhile, the governor hopeful has asked the police to investigate hate leaflets allegedly being dropped in some parts of Mombasa.
Awiti claims that leaflets waring ceratin communities are allegedly being dropped in Likoni, Mvita and Nyali.
The VDM governor hopeful is seeking to unseat Governor Hassan Joho in next month’s general election.
Others in the gubernatorial race are Senator Hassan Omar vying on Wiper ticket and businessman Suleiman Shahbal contesting on Jubilee party ticket.
