A fire has destroyed shops and residential houses in Baba Dogo area Saturday morning.
According to residents, the fire started at a furniture workshop at around 7.30am before spreading to adjacent shops and houses.
"It must have been caused by an electrical fault ... We rarely experience such incidents in this area," said Aggrey Opiyo, a resident.
The Nairobi firefighters did not arrive in time, prompting the residents to use stagnant water to put out the fire as others tried to rescue property from their houses.
Irate residents were to later chase away the Nairobi county fire engine that arrived two hours after the fire had been contained.
