The High Court on Monday ordered for a recount of all the ballots cast in the Embakasi East constituency poll carried out as part of the General Election on August 8, 2017.
The order for the recount was granted in response to an application made by the petitioner Francis Mureithi who lost to the Orange Democratic Movement’s Babu Owino on a Jubilee ticket.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has Tuesday and Wednesday to make the sealed ballot boxes available to the court before the Deputy Registrar gives directions on how the exercise should be conducted on February 14.
However, the controversial MP Babu Owino has taken to his social media account alleging that President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto are behind the push for a recount of votes.
"I know it is in Uhuru's and Ruto’s interest in having a by-election in Embakasi East," reads Babu's facebook post.
"Instead of wasting time recounting all votes in Embakasi East constituency in which they have messed with the ballot boxes, why don’t they order for a by-election because either way, they have the judge in their pocket. I will still win with a bigger margin. They can go to hell," he added.
Babu won the hotly contested Embakasi East parliamentary seat after beating his closest rival Mr Mureithi.
